Oh hi! I’m Alia. Journal of Food, Travel, and Pretty Things is my little project to share things I wish people told me when I visit new places. I love to travel, so I make time for it despite working as a full-time engineer and a part-time piano teacher. Living in Colorado makes it easy to get away for a day or two, but I want everyone to feel like they can make time for adventures in their life.
A few random things about me:
I am originally from NewYork. I moved to Colorado when I was 12, and decided to stay there because I got too attached. I especially love Boulder, and it bugs me when people start trash talking it.
I like outdoorsy stuff – hiking, biking, camping, swimming in the ocean, you name it. I like how nature can be quiet and peaceful or noisy and still somehow peaceful. But if I want to be alone for a while, I like to dissolve in a crowd instead (there’s that big city upbringing).
Food is like an addiction to me. I’m happiest when there’s a whole bunch of little things to taste in front of me, so bring on the sushi and tapas bars.
Along those lines, anything dessert-like is especially wonderful. Especially the little mini-desserts that got so popular lately, because I can try everything on the menu in one meal.
Yes, I speak English . I’ll be glad to talk at you in English anytime, but I’d much rather you ask me for a phrase to say instead of just asking to “say something”. There’s nothing that makes my brain forget my native language more.
I play piano, and find it extremely fun to try playing Chopin on any piano I find while traveling. I kind of wish I could play guitar because I could carry one around with me.
I have two bunnies and a husband. Bunnies are really fun – it’s kind of like having very quiet cats who get into a lot of trouble. They’re also a lot easier to take care of than a husband.
